Where do we start with the conception of each new range? We sometimes ask ourselves that very question as we approach a blank screen, surrounded by baskets of overflowing fabrics just begging to be used! With seven different collections released every year, there's always an abundance of ideas to to keep your lil' munchkins warm or cool, but always comfy, and fabrics to suit the ever-changing seasons in a calendar year. Come along as we share some insights into how our team created this new range of unique baby, toddler and children's clothing, from inception to your doorstep.
Welcome behind the scenes of Oishi-m Autumn '18.
A critical step in the process of creating art for tees and yardages is to check the strike-off's (early print samples) for approval prior to production being ordered. Seen above, our head designer inspects the first strike-off of our Dazey Laze Longsleeve Splice T Shirt - checking print colours against globally recognised colour charts, and testing the hand feel of the ink to ensure it's soft to the touch. At this stage, we also have the opportunity to tweak the preferred scale and colour of any artwork. Approvals were also done for the fiesta-rific colours in the Taco Tuesday Longsleeve T Shirt.
We always sell out of any garments that reference outerspace! This time, the Galaxy Longsleeve T Shirt is sure to rocket into the stratosphere, with planets and stardust that's been colour matched with contrasting striped sleeve fabrics. The choice between wider or narrower stripes makes itself known once they're placed in scale. You can also see a glimpse of Monstera Magic Harem Pant fabric here too - getting the hues of beige tones and denim blues just right to achieve the desired washed look was on the agenda this day.
Overseen by a custom mini figure (nicknamed the 'Powerful Elf' who's super power is a strong cup of coffee), our Oishi-m designer sets to work on the Twilight View Longsleeve Splice T Shirt. A brief was supplied and the artwork was commissioned by a local artist. Now that the strike-off's have arrived from the printers, we check the registration of the screen print. At this stage of the process we also have the opportunity to tweak the preferred scale of the artwork, for example choosing between a smaller or larger scale version of the twilight farm scene. We chose the smaller scale so that the picture would be recognisable on our teeniest garment 3-6mths, right through to our largest 7-8yrs tee.
Our new garments introduced this season, especially for the chills of the change of season, are our Cosy Hoodies. We have utilised our world famous double-breasted wraparound hoodie silhouette, and added an extra cosy layer into the hood. As they say, oils ain't oils, and faux faur ain't faux fur, so a great deal of energy goes into sourcing the best, softest, lusciously warm teddy bear fur on the market. The result is the Make Believe Cosy Hoodie with colour saturated pansies abound, and our Downball Champion Cosy Hoodie with quilted checks in rich jewel tones.
Our social media channels are important platforms so we can speak to our community, and we always enjoy creating flat lay outfits to demonstrate the myriad outfitter options. Equally, we love it when you tag us on Instagram with your interpretations of Oishi-m!
