On a Winter's day, we discovered the beauty of art and gardens...
The Barwon Heads Community Garden is a community project for both Arts and Gardening, supported by many members. Individual and community plots are rented, so people can garden organically to live more sustainably.
We had the pleasure of shooting our Winter Break '17 campaign here, and revelled in the natural beauty of this location and the way our kids engaged with the space.
They sought shelter in the hot house amongst ripe tomatoes, pretended to be pillars in the citrus arbour, played chasey around the campfire, and nibbled on herbs that grew in abundance in raised garden plots.
Some kids stopped to smell nasturtiums, lavender and dahlia's in bloom, while other mini-me's went on a bear hunt with their mama's in our special Mother's Day surprise, Women's Leggings (thanks for the support, they sold in a flash!!). There was freedom to run, be imaginative, and PYO to taste the bountiful produce, and one of the boys took on the role of 'mini gardener' with a micro wheelbarrow that entertained him for ages.
Come with us as we show you some behind the scenes pics of our day...
Let's jump straight into it!
The scene was set for a sublime day at the Barwon Heads Community Gardens, under the beautiful pastel sunfaded Buddhist prayer flags.
While the rest of the shoot went on elsewhere, these two were spotted having a quiet moment together in the sunshine. Lil' munchkin wears a Toshi beanie, Walk The Plank L/S Pocket T Shirt & Clear Directions Legging and 'aunty' wears Women's Cherry Mama Legging (now Sold Out online).
Sitting on a beautiful reclaimed wooden bench seat, in front of the 'Moonah Trees' frieze that makes these gardens so special.
The kids delighted in finding ripe fruit, vegies and herbs to pick and taste. Highlighter L/S Pocket T Shirt discovers something new...
Standing sentry like a a solider guarding the Eureka Lemons - 'A lemon tree so we can make lemonade.' Mandarine, citrus and cumquat trees also grow here in abundance.
Kids rule! They literally do what they want, where they want, when they want at Oishi-m photoshoots. We don't manufacture any of the scenes, instead leaving them to play and explore (while we're close by for safety, of course).
Lock out! Walk The Plank L/S Pocket T Shirt wants out! I remember at this moment hearing our photographer Ed Sloane, mutter "gates are always a winner". He's right, they always make a great backdrop, but especially when they're mermaid gates. Wow, amazing!
Have sandpit, will play. Sandpits always offer the perfect opportunity for the children to immerse themselves in play, making for easy access to great photos.
The kids flittered about like the butterflies and white moths that they disturbed. No rhyme or reason to their movements, just fluttering by with pure joy in a magical place.
Vegie plots at the perfect height for little hands to reach in and pick their faves. This little one's mummy said "seeing her discover the origin of her food was a particularly poignant moment. We don't grow any food at home, so this is really special."
Dahlia's in bloom, so much beauty in one place.
We celebrate the beauty of all children...
The old Game and Deep Sea Fishing truck speaks volumes about the region's oceanic history, with a tray back full of vegies and herbs...
... and a dilapidated bonnet full of succulents and aloe.
This iconic art piece, the Moonah Living Memory Fence, was created for the garden by eight local artists to reflect the local area, while still allowing the garden to be viewed through the individual panels. The neighbouring Moonah Tree forest, hooded plover birds and the local community are all represented in the frieze.
Outfit changes require a bit of mum's help...
...but atleast Oishi-m gear is easy to get on and off! How many mums does it take to change a 2 year old?! It's all hands on deck for outfit changes, which can happen 2 to 3 times per child in one photoshoot.
You can almost imagine this little one wondering "when will I be old enough to balance up there with the big kids?" The kids are the stars of the show...
... but the proud mama's love to shimmy in for a cuddle and a cheer at the end of a shoot.
Thanks for coming Behind The Scenes to see more of our shoot, we hope you enjoy seeing our 'out-takes' and what it takes to get the shots. As one of the mama's pictured above said, "I can't believe we get the beautiful campaign shots we do, when all I can remember is the meltdowns and tantrums that my 2 kids put me through!"
