What will your family do this Summer? Are you a bit like us, and realised that while you've been so busy planning Christmas you've forgotten we all have a stint of School Holidays ahead of us?! Check out our ideas for entertaining the kids over the summer holidays; ideas not only for Torquay, but also for wherever you are in Australia.
Whether it's a house by the sea, playing in the waves, or a visit to the city or country, we encourage everyone to do the opposite of your 'norm' and try a new destination, or sport, together. Visit a forest, a waterfall, walk the length of a deserted beach, scan the shoreline for seaglass and shells, seaweed and mermaid tails. Beach cricket, volleyball, baseball, sandcastle-making competitions... the list is endless for activities that make memories for a lifetime. Create a sandy race track for monster trucks and rally cars. Practice cartwheels and round-off's on the wet sand at low tide, or re-enact a song and dance routine from the end of year concert at the beach, park, or your loungeroom.
Take your Wobbel Board to any location and practise your balance no matter what the waves are doing. Pitch a tent in the backyard and set up beds and pillows for teddy bear picnics. Have a barbecue dinner, run in the sprinkler on the lawn (instead of a bath), and toast some marshmallows on a small fire as the sun sets. Have a bedtime story by torchlight and listen to the sounds of the night as you drift off to sleep in this very special setting.
Bust out the boardgames, feel the buzz of a competitive family challenge, and learn new card games. Take a bus, train or tram ride to a place you've never been, perhaps a local swimming pool, wildlife park, nature reserve, botanical gardens or a funky urban setting.
Have playdates with friends, make your own icy poles or frozen acai bowls, set up a slip n' slide on the lawn and put the sprinkler under the trampoline for some free fun! Go on a bike riding adventure with a picnic in your backpack, or visit a different skate park with your scooter or skateboard and learn some new tricks from the big kids.
If you’re coming down this way, we would love to see you and your munchkins at our Torquay store - we're moving our shop and office to a new location at Torquay Village (a few doors up from Surfcoast Wholefoods) as of Mid/Late January 2018 - so excited!
If you're staying on the coast for a while, you could enrol the kids in Vicswim, Nippers or Surf Groms to improve their swimming and ocean skills. Families play on the protected beaches like Cosy Corner or Fisho's, while the more experienced go surfing at nearby Jan Juc or tackle the bigger swells of Bells Beach. The official start point of the Great Ocean Road, Torquay is Victoria's surfing capital, so while you're here, capture the spirit of surf culture with a visit to the Surf World Surfing Museum with pictures and hands-on displays after a visit to Bells Beach.
After all that physical activity, treat 'em to a visit to the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie for indulgent choccy galore. Or enjoy fresh berry picking, great food and drinks at Raven's Creek Berry Farm, Moriac.
While at it's busiest in the hot summer months, Torquay is a year-round destination. We're all about 'sharing the love', and we have some fave local hangs like Cafe Moby (with a playground for the kids), Torquay Larder (Best Chai & Hot Chocolates), Fisho's (ethically caught fish n' chips overlooking the sea), and of course Surf City Plaza for the best shopping for teenagers (don't miss Baines Court Surf Seconds Outlets).
There's always the opportunity to visit our beautiful photoshoot locations in this region too. Check out the Google Map above, it's like a treasure map :) See you soon!
